Active between the years of 1940 until 1948, the Tuskegee Airmen of Alabama, also known as the Redtails, were an all-African American fighter squadron active during world war II. The proud and proficient squadron fought over 1,578 combat missions and maintained an excellent service record providing escort support on 179 bombing missions. Ultimately the Redtails served their country with honor, and distinction, accounting for eight Purple Hearts, one Silver Star, 96 Distinguished Flying Crosses, and 744 Air Medals, to name a few. These heralded airmen served their country with honour and distinction and are aptly immortalized on 999 pure silver!
Illustrated on the coin's reverse is a Tuskegee airman, strapping up his helmet with a look of pride and determination as he prepares for flight training at Moton Field, in Tuskegee Alabama. Shading, texturing, and careful etching are all applied to produce a detailed and beautifully rendered image. Within the background, two redtails fly in formation, with the airbase also visible. The inscription, "They fought two wars," is the legend, denotive of the fact that these men fought the evils of the axis powers, but also racial discrimination and hatred on their own soil.
Established in 1792 as the first national mint in the United States, the United States Mint is a bureau of the Department of the Treasury responsible for official legal tender coinage and precious metals bullion production. The United States Mint has a mission to serve Americans as the sole manufacturer and distributor of circulating currency coins. The U.S. mint also produces commemorative coins for collectors, silver and gold bullion coins for investors (such as the popular Eagle and Buffalo series), as well as Congressional Medals.
