Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things debuted in July 2016 and quickly became one of Netflix’s most popular television series ever. Rooted in 80's nostalgia, it has sparked a resurgence of pop culture items from the decade with every new season, including Eggo waffles and New Coke. Most recently, the series breathed new life into Kate Bush’s track 'Running Up That Hill' with the song soaring in streams on Spotify and entering the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time in its 38-year history. The series has also garnered over 70 awards worldwide including Emmys and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, and has been nominated for over 230 awards.
The coin’s coloured reverse pays tribute to the iconic Stranger Things Season 4 poster. The design showcases key characters; Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Max, and Will, joined by the rest of the Hawkins crew, all framed by the chilling divide between the real world and the Upside Down. Adding to the ominous atmosphere are the piercing gaze of Vecna, the ghostly silhouette of the Creel House, and a swarm of Demobats cutting through red smoke. The design also includes the Stanger Things logo along with The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
The coin is housed in a black wooden case with red accents. The lid of the case features embossed details, as well as the official Netflix and Stranger Things logos. Packaged in a themed shipper, the release is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the British Royal Mint's 3rd branch in Australia. The historical Hay Street location handled gold refining until moving to a modern facility in April 1990. Ownership of the mint was transferred to the Government of Western Australia in July of 1970. Under an agreement with the Commonwealth Treasury, they were empowered to mint and market gold, silver, and platinum as Australian legal tender to investors and collectors worldwide. Today, they are amongst the elite world mints whose pure gold, silver, and platinum items are trusted without question. Items such as the Australian Nugget, Silver Coin Series (Kangaroo, Kookaburra, Koala, and Platypus to name a few), as well as the Australian Lunar Gold and Silver Coin Series are extensively sought after by bullion investors worldwide.
