Barbie has been a favorite in children's toys for centuries and a childhood staple for many young girls around the world. Barbie officially debuted on March 9, 1959, during the American International Toy Fair that took place in New York. The original design for Barbie came from the German Bid Lili doll that came out on August 12, 1955. In 1964, Mattel acquired rights to Bid Lili so that the company would have all copyright abilities for the doll that looked very similar to Barbie.

The famous doll received a lot of criticism over the year for her body proportions and how it would affect the children who played with her, but her appearance has changed significantly over time, and she is still extremely popular today.

The additions of Barbie's family and friends came in later years, with her boyfriend Ken being the first addition, followed by her best friend Midge, her sister Skipper, and other friends of color. The African American incarnation of Barbie was released in 1980.
